GreenFacts publishes a Digest of the IPCC AR4 WG1 report

Brussels, 3 April 2007. At the occasion of the meeting of the Working Group II (WG2) of the IPCC in Brussels this week, GreenFacts has published a clear and faithful summary of Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis, Summary for Policymakers by the IPCC WG1, the first part of the IPCC 4th Assessment Report (AR4), on www.greenfacts.org/en/climate-change-ar4/. This GreenFacts Digest is available in English, Dutch, French, and Spanish. In the course of 2007, GreenFacts will also summarise the reports of WG2 and WG3 after their release to give a full overview of the IPCC AR4.

“The European Community is looking forward to your finalisation of the 4th IPCC assessment report on impacts and adaptation” said Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas in his welcoming speech to the IPCC Working Group II at their assembly in Brussels yesterday. “The fight against climate change can only be won on the basis of sound science.”

Highlights of the IPCC WG1 report

The warming of global climate is now unequivocal. Eleven of the last twelve years rank among the 12 warmest years ever recorded since 1850. Global average temperatures have increased by 0.74°C over the last 100 years, with the greatest increase having occurred in the last 50 years.

Concentrations of greenhouse gases have continued to increase during the last few years. According to the IPCC this increase is mainly due to human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels, land use change, and agriculture. Further, it is very likely that human activities since 1750 have had a global warming effect on the Earth.

For the period of 1980 to the end of the 21st century, global temperatures are projected to increase by 1.8 to 4.0°C, and global sea levels to rise by 18 to 59 cm. Even if greenhouse gas concentrations were to be stabilised, warming and sea level rise caused by human activities will continue for centuries.
