Title: Health & Environment Science Editor

Mission: Contributing to the editorial quality of GreenFacts' publications and their timely production from initiation to final publication
(see www.greenfacts.org)

Supervisor: Stephanie Mantell, Publication Manager

Job description:

Editing and Project Management:

Work with the Editorial team and with external Editors on the preparation of GreenFacts' publications, i.e. clear impartial summaries of authoritative scientific documents on health and environment issues presented in a three level-structure of increasing detail on the Internet.

  • Support the selection process of upcoming publications; potentially suggesting new topics; investigating authoritative source documents etc.
  • Coordinate publication projects from initiation to online release, i.e. for a given publication, follow the contacts with editors, scientific reviewers, peer-review coordinators, and potential partners; ensure deadlines are met; keep related "Planning", "Contacts” and "Panel of Experts" listings up-to-date.
  • Prepare the structure of the summaries; after some preliminary reading of the source document, propose a canvas of questions to an external Editor.
  • Suggest editorial and stylistic changes to the successive drafts written by the external Editors and work closely with them. Ensure that the "big picture" is always evident.
  • Complement the summary texts with explanatory glossary definitions, useful links specific to each topic etc.
  • Participate in the effective translation and editing process of other language versions (French, Spanish, German and/or Dutch) in collaboration with other Editorial team members and trainees.

Web Implementation:

Work closely with the I.T. team which takes care of the technical aspects of the web implementation.
  • Participate in all aspects of the effective web implementation of the publications and their translations in collaboration with the GreenFacts IT Team (posting glossary definitions, making cross links, providing illustrations etc.).
  • Ensure a thorough editorial quality check of the pages which have been put online by the I.T. team.

Requirements :

  • University degree in science, preferably in health science.

  • Language skills: excellent English (for example acquired through studies in an English speaking country); good working knowledge of French; knowledge of another language such as Dutch, German and/or Spanish is a plus.

  • Ability to understand scientific jargon and to communicate complex information effectively in a language for the non-specialist.

  • Good organizational and team working skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Computer skills, particularly in Word, Excel and web content management software (or readiness to learn).

  • Previous experience in the non-profit field is considered a plus.

  • Entitlement to work in the European Union.

  • Preparedness to attend a face-to-face interview in Brussels at own expense.

The job evolution may include:

  • Promote GreenFacts in scientific communities and expand its networks among universities and scientific academies.
  • Write articles to present GreenFacts in scientific newsletters.
  • Participate in networking events to prospect for potential Scientific Board members and to increase GreenFacts recognition among the scientific community.
  • Develop contacts with international organizations (WHO, EU, UN…) and follow their on-going scientific projects in view of involving GreenFacts in these projects.
