Funding History

We have always aimed to be funded by a wide diversity of sources. However, funding diversity could not be achieved from the beginning, notably because subsidies from Public Authorities and Foundations are generally reserved to organizations that are at least three years old.

Up to 2003, we established our publication procedures, our multi-stakeholder governance structures and developed our staff. We fully relied on an initial funding from the Solvay Group, except for a support from the Ferrari Textiles group in 2003.

In 2004, the organization was still less than three years old. We were not yet eligible for most government and institutions subsidies or foundation grants, and could generally not apply for calls and tenders issued by Public Authorities. Therefore, we had to find additional contributions from corporations and individual donors in order to diversify our income sources.

In 2005, we were three years old. We were therefore able to further diversify our income sources, and received financial contributions from:

  • The HARAFI Foundation, a Swiss foundation promoting sustainable fishing practices.
  • The Swiss Government's Agency for Development and Cooperation,
  • IRSIB - IWOIB, the Scientific Research and Innovation Institute of the Brussels-Capital Region.
  • The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, for translating two of their reports.
  • Several Donors.
  • Several Corporate Partners: Carrefour, CEFIC (European Chemical Industry Council, jointly with Euro Chlor and PlasticsEurope), ECPA (European Crop Protection Association), Ferrari Textiles, GSK (GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals), P&G (Procter & Gamble), Raffinerie Tirlemontoise, Solvay, Suez, Total.
